Metalock Brasil was contacted by a shipowner from Dubai to perform an inspection on a faulty alternator, with a power rating of 750 KVA, manufactured by Taiyo Electric, our represented brand.
After onboard inspection and electrical measurements, it was found that the winding was compromised and that it would be necessary to rewind the main stator at our headquarters, located in Santos (SP).
The client requested that Metalock Brasil carry out the disassembly of the unit, as well as arrange for its removal from the engine room and transport it to the ship’s deck, so that it could later be sent to our facility.
At Metalock Brasil headquarters, we conducted dimensional inspection of the rotor and generator covers, all within manufacturer tolerances. We then performed dynamic balancing of the rotor to ensure the system operates in balance.
In the electrical part, thermal treatment and electrical measurements of the diodes, main rotor winding, exciter stator winding, and exciter rotor winding were performed.
We requested tolerances and the electrical design from Taiyo Electric. Subsequently, we rewound the stator according to the original equipment design.
In March 2024, the ship, which had continued its journey to the Middle East, returned to Santos, at which point we reboarded to install the unit.
We conducted mechanical installation and alignment between the alternator and the motor. We also performed electrical connections. The alternator was then load-tested, following the manufacturer’s protocol.
All tests were satisfactory and approved by the classification society DNV!
