Metalock Brasil carried out the application of SPS (Sandwich Plate System) on a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) located in the Santos Basin, in the state of Santa Catarina. The application was performed on the lower structure of the vessel’s storage tank to restore the corroded areas of the bottom plate and reinstate its original strength.
SPS serves as an alternative repair method to conventional steel renewal techniques (such as “crop and replace”). It utilizes the existing corroded or worn plate as one side of a steel composite panel, consisting of a new top plate and an elastomer core. The resulting composite permanently restores or enhances the strength of the original structure.
In other words, with the application of SPS, the cavity between the existing and the new plate is filled with elastomer core material and will no longer degrade.
Consequently, following the completion of the SPS installation on the FPSO, carried out by certified technicians from Metalock Brasil, the composite panels, created by bonding the solid elastomer core to the upper and lower (existing) plates, restored the original plate’s strength.
In addition to preventing future corrosion of the plate, its strength has been improved, ensuring the long-term integrity of the lower hull structure.
